Recently, the 2024 High-level Forum on Poverty Reduction and Development was held in Beijing with the theme of "Jointly Promoting the Global Poverty Reduction Process and Building a Harmonious and Beautiful Village", and the "2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation – Poverty Reduction and Development Conference" and the "2024 Global Poverty Reduction Partnership Seminar" were held at the same time. 300 people, including government officials, envoys to China, experts and scholars from 30 countries and representatives of 10 international organizations, attended the forum. The High-level Forum on Poverty Reduction and Development, which has been held for 12 sessions since its inception, has become a mechanism exchange platform with important international influence in the field of poverty reduction and development, helping Chinese and foreign sectors to exchange experiences and promote cooperation. The forum was hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, organized by the China International Poverty Reduction Center, and supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). At the forum, the participants shared the progress made by different countries in the field of poverty reduction, analyzed the difficulties and challenges they faced, and broadened their ideas for discussing future cooperation.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in his congratulatory letter that the forum underscored the importance of working together to tackle global poverty. Siddharth Chatterjee, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations Development System in China, said that China has achieved a great victory in poverty reduction, using 9% of the world's arable land to feed nearly 20% of the world's population.
Sogun said that China has won the largest battle against poverty in human history, and "China's experience in poverty reduction continues to inspire other developing countries and provide valuable lessons for Cambodia." He said that in recent years, Cambodia and China have carried out a series of cooperation in the field of poverty reduction. For example, the Cambodia-China Friendship Poverty Alleviation Demonstration Village Project, launched in January 2021, combines China's poverty alleviation experience with the actual situation in Cambodia, bringing many development changes to local villages.
Valeria Britty, Special Secretary of the Ministry of Social Development and Assistance, Family and Hunger of Brazil, spoke highly of China's leadership in poverty alleviation and hoped that Brazil and China would strengthen exchanges and cooperation in the field of poverty reduction in the future.
Francis Murba, assistant minister of agriculture of Liberia, said in an interview with this reporter that since the reform and opening up, China has led more than 700 million poor rural people out of poverty. China has actively fulfilled its responsibilities as a major country and contributed to the global poverty reduction process through the implementation of South-South cooperation projects, agricultural aid projects, and poverty alleviation demonstration cooperation projects.
From 2017 to 2020, the demonstration cooperation project on poverty alleviation in East Asia implemented by China and Laos in Vientiane City and Luang Prabang Province of Laos has achieved good results, bringing tangible benefits to the local people. For example, the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of Laos, Lamkang Tuan Chawan, said that the opening of the Laos-China railway has enhanced the development potential of Laos, accelerated the pace of Laos' development, and stimulated regional economic growth. Kang Zuo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development of Myanmar, said that thanks to China's support, the Myanmar Poverty Reduction Demonstration Cooperation Project has been successfully implemented. Poverty alleviation initiatives such as the project have not only improved the economic and social conditions in Myanmar's rural areas, but also promoted the process of urban-rural integration and increased the accessibility of financial services in rural areas. Myanmar is building on the success of the project to build smart villages in other regions, combining technological innovation and sustainable development practices to improve rural productivity and well-being.
Abduhman Diouf, First Counsellor of the Senegalese Embassy in China, told this reporter that Senegal and China have close cooperation in the field of agriculture.
